I believe the 5th Missouri Infantry Regiment was one of the early units organized by Frank Blair from private German immigrant militias in St. Louis. Several of the early "Missouri" regiments mustered into Union service were manned either by Germans or U.S. citizens from Illinois.

The general's full name was Friedrich Carl Heinrich Salomon. 7 April 1826 is usually given as his birthdate. But the parish register, which I had the opportunity to examine, notes "midnight, 8 April" as his date of birth... Good summary of biographical key data...

I also believe one of his other brothers was governor of Wisconsin
Younger brother Edward Salomon became the Governor of Wisconsin when his predecessor, Louis Harvey fell off a boat and drowned in the Tennessee River while bring medical supplies to Wisconsin troops after Shiloh. Older brother Charles Salomon was the colonel of the 5th Missouri (Union) and 9th Wisconsin infantry regiments and was brevetted brigadier general after the War.

A younger brother, Herman Salomon was a sergeant in the 1st Missouri Engineers. No other Salomon brothers that I can find.
Once again it appears that I have to apologize for some possible misinformation. I stated that Salomon was one of 4 brothers ,and that part is true enough. But a biography of him (Stewart Sifakis) has this sentence ...."Settling in Wisconsin, where his brother Edward S. Salomon was destined to become a Civil War governor----his other two brothers became brevet brigadier generals----he engaged in civil engineering before entering the Union army".
