My bad I should of said Daniel Ellis.
"the most famous pilot was Daniel Ellis. A farmer and wagon maker from Carter County(Tn) , Ellis had helped burn the Holston River Bridge in Sullivan County, joined the Unionist encampment near Elizabethon, been captured by Confederate forces,and escaped after a few days confinement. Ellis began piloting in August 1862 and continued until early 1865. He claimed to have made at least fifteen trips into Kentucky and to have brought out several thousand men. Ellis also acted as a guerrilla captain and led several attacks on secessionists and Confederate troops in Carter and Johnson Counties. Shortly after the war Ellis published an account of his experiences,The Thrilling Adventures of Daniel Ellis. Ellis inflated his accomplishments , but much of the work is corroborated by other sources. and it is by far one of the best sources on the danger of piloting."
