Lee Robert E. Lee - A Hero Every Child Should Know.

I found this interesting.

I've been going through some books that have been handed down across several generations in my family...

This one bears a copyright of 1908... look who is 'bookended' by Washington and Lincoln.

Let's have a contest. List all the purported heroes in the book and let's see how many we can eliminate using today's college campus standards. We can easily eliminate Lee and Washington because they were both slave owners. Lincoln made racist statements so he's out (if you said it once you live with it forever these days so we've gotta be fair in applying the standards).

Who else is no longer worthy ? Think of the children. Do we want this book to end up in our libraries ?

I'd like to point out that while i am the one who posted it, I didn't/do not offer up my approval/disapproval - i simply posted an antiquated publishing for all of us here to perhaps reflect on 'oh how the times have changed'.

This can perhaps serve as yet another tool by which we may gauge the 'climate' of 1908.

This could be a great discussion point - the book (at a quick glance) featured people across the world/history - not just Americans.

Still interested?

If so, i will happily post them up!

I am definitely interested to know who else is in the book! Indeed, it reflects the age in which the book was published.

Great Post and Great reply, I just wish I could hold my tongue like that. :D but on the subject of the books its like the CW period Southern school math book with the question, If a Confederate Soldier could kill 9 yankees in a day how many yankees could he kill in a week?

Don't agree slavery is the reason why you might want to remove Lee from the list. The issue is that he waged war on the USA

Richard the Lion-Hearted
He was a brutal warmonger, even by medieval standards.
The hero we usual get from Robin hood and similar have very very little to do with the historical person. (one of the few details the latest robin hood movie got right)

With today's snowflakes and crybabies, they would throw that book in the trash. They are too busy looking for safe places than looking for heros.

You forgot Buttercup:D I would suspect they aren't History Majors as if they were they would know about the history of the last government that promoted the burning of books.

right up there with Benedict Arnold all children should learn one country one flag one United states.

That is John Brown the traitor's place right along side Benedict Arnold, not Robert E. Lee. Lee's story has nothing to do with being a traitor, he chose to fight for one side of America (his own state) not against it.
