He served with the 4th North Carolina, and after the death of previous Colonel James Wood, he was promoted to be the last Colonel of the regiment.

In 1865 while recuperating from his wounds he met and fell in love with his second cousin, Fannie Swann Moore. Upon trying to return to the 4th North Carolina Regiment from his recent wedding Osbourne learned that General Lee had surrendered.

He had been raised a Presbyterian but left the church in 1874 to join his wife's church, the Episcopal. He was ordained as priest on May 29, 1881. On May 10, 1887 the Thompson Orphanage and Training Institution opened it's doors. The orphanage was named after Lewis Thompson who had given money to a failed school that Osbourne opened the ophanage on the old school property.
