The more radical Republicans of Minnesota passed a resolution censuring Norton for opposing impeachment.They also called for his resignation.

Between the Mexican American War and his becomming a lawyer in Ohio in 1852 he spent some time in California and Nicaragua.

A brother to Anthony Banning Norton, a member of the Texas House of Representatives and Adjutant General appointed by Sam Houston.

Norton died in office, The man who succeeded him was William Windom, future two time Secretary of the Treasury. Windom's first term as a Senator was only from July 1870 to January 1871.So it was apparent that he was filling out someone else's term.
