Mounted artillery saber question

This is my shortest model 1832 foot artillery sword. It is dated 1832 and has the hilt supplied by Huse. The problem with that particular hilt is illustrated by the collapse of the grip portion causing the rivet heads to stick out loosening their hold between the hilt and the blade. At some time after the sword was made, probably after the grip failed, the blade was cut down and the edges near the hilt were beaten flat. There was a mild point put on the forward edge to form some sort of scraping tool. I could see it being used to remove paint, barnacles or something else.
