Federal mounted overcoat.

I recently ordered a Federal overcoat/greatcoat from C&C for some cold events during this holiday season(I know I know, I needed one in a hurry to be a stop gap). I ordered the infantry pattern, however they sent me a mounted pattern coat instead. Sadly due to being busy I missed the return window so I'm stuck with it.

Would infantry wearing a mounted greatcoat have been a thing? Common? I was originally planning to do a bit of a defarb by replacing the buttons with good ones and possibly redo the top stitching until I have the money for a good one one pops up I can grab used. Is it worth keeping or should I just sell?

Mounted services overcoats were not generally used by the army until the 1870s. Not to say it couldnt have happened. I don't imagine any foot troops would want the extra weight to carry. Maybe you can trade. Find a cold 'Critterboy' and sell it to him.
Cheers!

If you needed one in a hurry use it for now, unless you were doing a hard core event I highly doubt anybody would call you on it. But eventually if it were me I'd save up for the right style and better quality, sell that one and put it towards that.
That was essentially the plan. Use if or a bit and sell it. I couldn't get off work for Meade's birthday anyway so I don't actually need it and am probably just going to sell it now.

In spite of their "return window" policy, I would think they would allow a return to correct their mistake in sending you the wrong garment. I'm not familiar with C&C, but I think they should want to protect their reputation by doing the right thing.

One would think.

I plan to reach out to them this week, but it might be easier to offload to some farms I know lol.
Or heck it's actually a nice coat, maybe I'll just keep it and wear it as a normal every day coat.

I've never returned an item to C&C, but their customer service otherwise has been quite good. Realistically, you wear a greatcoat during the parts of the reenacting season when it's really cold. Mostly at night or early in the morning before you get moving and warmed up. The rest of the year, it's an extra blanket or a pillow rolled up on the top of your knapsack. I honestly can't see anyone ever calling you on it at an event. However... the cape on the mounted coat is significantly longer than the cape on the foot pattern coat. You may find that it gets in the way when you handle your musket. If it doesn't bother you, however, don't worry about it.

Good advice. My cape gets in the way of everything so I button it up on the rear with the bottom button if I want to get anything done.

My greatcoat is from C&C. I think I've had it for about 20 years now and have been completely happy with it. I know that the wool it's made from is too heavy but I just don't care TBH. If it's cold enough to wear a greatcoat I don't need my interior dialogue saying "I'm freezing, but dang am I authentic." :bounce:

If you want, I have a federal infantry great coat from jarnagin, I'm asking 250 for it but I'll go down if needed, it has federal engineer buttons but they can be replaced (sorry, replied to the wrong person)
