From what I gathered he was also wounded at Gettysburg and did not return to duty unti Febuary1864. He was captured in Selma on June 26, 1865 while enroute home. He was paroled the same day. He was a partner in Smith & Motes & Motes & Moore Photographic Studios. Said to have received many national awards for his camera work. He is said to have done an exceptional portrait of Woodroow Wilson facing left.

I am not sure I have heard of him. I am not very knowledgeable about post Civil War photographers.
 
Earlier I came upon a short story of him using double exposure for some trick photography in his earlier works. He must have dazzled the locals. However I can't seem to locate the article to verify any of it.
