It says in the article he was in his own words only a private in the CS Army, but as he became leader of his branch of some Confederate Veterans society he was given the honorary title of general.

I thought he may have been given a honorary title , didn't Eisenhower make private Walter Williams a general?

The commander of the United Confederate Veterans was called a General of the United Confederate Veterans. This is how he was a General it was not during a war it was an official title granted by the UCV
