The Oregon Trail was from the Missouri River to the Oregon territory. In the great Migration of 1843 settler came from as far as New England. They were looking for a new and prosperous life in Oregon.
When they had cream, they churned their own butter One thing they liked was to mix the fresh butter with molasses and eggs, creating a delightful spread for cornbread and other breads.
Oregon Trail Molasses Butter
1 cup molasses
2 tablespoons of butter
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
pinch baking soda
salt
2 eggs, well beaten
Mix molasses, butter, nutmeg, soda and pinch of salt in saucepan. Bring to boil. Beat eggs in separate bowl. Stir hot mixture into eggs. Return egg mixture to the saucepan. Cook and stir till thick. Let chill. Then is ready to spread on cornbread or other breads.
There is mention of this spread in recipes during Civil War period. Just another recipe that liked during several periods of history.
