Probably the most well researched, thorough, and honest book written about Meade's command from the time it was dropped on him several days before the battle, to the pursuit of Lee's army to the Potomac River. To say that Meade just made it in time to Gettysburg by a hairs breath is an understatement. The author goes into detail of the myriad of problems and situations he faced just after taking command and moving his Army. What the troops of the Army of the Potomac had to endure not just during the battle but during their march to Gettysburg and during their pursuit. Lee's Army was vastly more prepared with ammunition, food, fodder, and clothing, than was Meade's. Meade was a fighting general! I had a hard time putting it down and had to take some time to digest how critical Meade's situation truly was. I read a lot and I can honestly say that this book is outstanding and should be read by everyone who has an interest in our American Civil War.

I understand he was a reluctant at his promotion, and 'to the best of his abilities' he proved he could lead. Did the book go into any detail about the aftermath of the battle, and the difficulties that arose in logistics for following up the pursuit? Thanks,
Lubliner.

Very much so. I was in awe of the troops grit and determination in spite of the horrible weather, lack of shoes, ammunition, and most of all lack of food. It was a better read than Coddington's book on the pursuit who seemed to follow the theme that it was Meade's fault for Lee's escape.
