Already a major general in the South Carolina militia at the outbreak of the war he also became a brigadier general of the state troops. He led one of it's brigades at the attack on Fort Sumter.

He led Maxcy Gregg's brigade after Gregg's death at Fredricksburg.

How serious were his wounds, two in 1862 and one in 1863 and 1864. Whether he missed Antietam and Gettysburg due to being wounded at 2nd Bull Run and Chancellorsville?

The one at Chancellorsville is said to be his worst. It was a minie ball below the knee and it kept him out of service from May 1863 to February 1864.

After taking over Maxcy Greggs brigade at Fredericksburg he commanded this same brigade for the duration of the war except when he was out because of his being wounded.

He became colonel 14th South Carolina Infantry in April 1862. The 14th was assigned to Maxcy Gregg's brigade .

After McGowan was promoted to brigadier he took command of the South Carolina brigade in the Light Division. A fellow officer in that brigade was the nephew of his former law partner. That fellow officer was to be McGowan's successor and later general Abner M. Perrin.
