Known as "Old One Wing" because his arm was amputated after a wound at Churubusco in the Mexican War.His right arm was shattered by grapeshot. He left the field after the wounding and relinquished the command to Thomas Jackson.

Robert E. Lee said of Martin, "General Martin is one to whom North Carolina owes a debt she can never repay." Martin surrendered the last remaining organized Confederate force in North Carolina on May 6, 1865.

He was an adjutant general and Major general in the North Carolina State Troops then was promoted to brigadier in the Confederate Army in June 2, 1862. He resigned as brigadier due to conflicting duty. But he was recommissioned on Aug 12, 1862 and transferred to North Carolina ( at Lee's urging). His recommissioning was to the date of rank like his first (May 15, 1862)

Said to be a brilliant organizer and was largely responsible for North Carolina's providing the largest number and best equipped number of troops of any of the Southern States in the first year of the war.

He assisted in the "bottling up of Burnside" at Bermuda Hundred.

His second wife,Hetty King, was the sister of Gen. Rufus King.
