He was captain of Co.B of the 15th North Carolina when it's Colonel McKinney was killed at Lee's Mill. The regiment was reorganized several weeks later and MacRae was elected Lt. Col.on May 2, 1862. He was made Colonel of the unit on Feb.27, 1863.
