While clearing off a shelf in my kitchen, I came upon an old recipe of my mother's. According to a note on the recipe, Ms. Alcott was so fond of this dish that she named her Concord, Massachusetts home "Apple Slump" -- now that's MY kind of person!
6 Cups apples, peeled, cored and diced
1 Cup sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 Cup water
1 1/2 Cups (all-purpose) flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 Cup milk (approximate)
Combine apple slices, sugar, cinnamon and water in a saucepan with a tight fitting lid. Heat to a boiling point.
Sift together flour, baking soda and salt. Add enough milk to make a soft dough.
Drop dough from a tablespoon onto apple mixture. Cover tightly and cook over low heat for 30 minutes.
Serve with cream.
