Looking for authentic kepi

I have seen the kepis on Tortuga Trading as well but they are all post war and way too high priced. I would love to have the 7th New York kepi to go with my fatigue uniform but I'm not willing to pay $2000+ for it. The site is owned and ran by the "EXPERT" from Pawn Stars, Sean Rich.

I'm in the market for an authentic civil war kepi. I was hoping for some recommendations as I don't want to get something fake. I was looking at the one below:

That's a very nice looking kepi. After spending time at the Mansfield Civil War show today I decided I am going to narrow my collection to Civil War and Indian War Federal cloth items. I will most likely be selling my New York fatigue uniform and my Dandy 5th dress uniform.

In response to the OP there were several nice forage caps and kepis at today's Civil War show in Mansfield, Ohio. The Union Drummer Boy was there with a nice Pennsylvania forage cap you can check out on their website www.uniondb.com. It is a little higher priced than the one at Shiloh Relics. They both offer layaway programs though.

That is a stellar cap, most likely war surplus, as most surviving examples are.

Man, that thing scares me! It looks too much like a well-worn reenactor repro to suit me.

It is highly unlikely that the 7th NY Kepi could be proven to be of ACW period, too many issues with it, most that are found are post war as this one appears to be. These kepis were produced for many years after the war.

Brim thickness, buttons, height of crown and interior Horstmann Brothers stamp are indicators that it is post war. Many of these become repurposed into nefarious confederate kepis........

Has anybody ever dealt with Perry Adams antiques? I'm a little concerned with their "Civil War" frock coat. It looks more like a post war frock to me but I could be wrong I suppose.

The Horse Soldier in Gettysburg, Dave Taylor, Shiloh Relics, midtenrelics.com (Larry Hicklen), John Spicer in Mississippi, all these are reputable dealers. My advice would be to educate yourself first (books, lots of books) before handing out big $$$$$ on something you may not be educated on or familiar with. Best of luck and good hunting!
