My Union Cavalry Collection

Sorry disregard that question, I see the picture of the hem and the instep strap buttons.
The pants are regulation Civil War issue enlisted mounted cavalry trousers. They are made of Kersey. As you know, Kersey was a cheaper, coarser, twill-woven woolen fabric. The waistband and pockets are cotton drill (diagonal weave). The yellow cord was added, indicating that the owner had received a promotion to officer, or that an officer had determined to save his privately purchased trousers and buy a cheaper government pair from the Quartermaster for wear in the field.

The "3" is the size, and the "45" could be the inspector's or the seamstress's number. The ink stencil "SA" and construction details indicate the pants were made at the Schuylkill Arsenal.

Yes that is what I get from those, I have a similar pair, only infantry, where the officer branch stripe was added post commission. I have a few officer trousers and all have the canvas or cotton reinforcement 3-4 inches from the hem, along with the buttons for the instep straps to keep from riding up while mounted.

Yours are very nice and enviable!

Hello collectors,

Here is my current collection of the Civil War Union cavalry. I will post details of the items in future posts over the next few days. It took me a long time to find some of these historical items, and I am still looking. I need to find the correct kepi next.

I also collect uniforms and equipment from the Indian War period, but I will not be posting them since this is just the American Civil War.

Your collection is interesting to me since my great grandfather was in the 13th Illinois Cavalry.
