I was curious if anyone knew of any good books on Robert E. Lee? I have looked on Amazon but I am not sure what to make of some of the reviews. Thanks!

This list pretty much covers what I've read....Freeman and Thomas being my favorites. I would also check out "Reading the Man" just because it's a good counterpoint and has some new correspondence included. Robertson is a great researcher and author, and I have to recommend Lee's Lieutenants just because it clearly shows what he had to work with. :)

You can also read Recollections and Letters, of course.

The Wartime Papers of R.E. Lee by Clifford Dowdey and Louis Manarin is really good. Also, Dowdey's one volume entiled;"Lee" is good.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, I found a copy of "Lee: An Abridgement" for pretty cheap on amazon. I will keep those other titles mentioned in mind after I finish this first book! ;)

Emory Thomas' biography is a good starting point. Freeman and Pryor provide much more depth, but probably not as a first read.
