He started the war in an Infantry unit but transferred over to a artillery unit a year later and served out the war in that arm of the military.

When he returned from captivity he found that he lost his colonelcy in an election. His old unit underwent reorganization on June 13, 1862. This is where he was transferred to an artillery unit, he was made Lt. Colonel on August 18, 1862.

I confused this man with the Lightfoot responsible for the about face order at the Sunken Road of Antietam, later Colonel of John Brown Gordon's 6th Alabama.
