Even though his brigade was attached to Breckinridges division at Murfreesboro, it was an independent unit until it was assigned to Benjamin Cheatham's division a month before Chickamauga.
 
That "serving at Shiloh with distinction " was leading his brigade (3rd, Withers Div.) in a bayonet charge on a Union position. The charge was unsuccessful. The brigade had only formed several weeks before and Jackson had only taken charge of it on March 29. 1862.
