I have received this sword as a gift (no scabbard), but aside from knowing that it is an import, I don't know what it is. The blade is 29.5 inches not counting the hilt. The blade is blued - which has faded - and is etched with floral designs and U.S. on the left side of the blade. and marked Walscheid Solingen. There is a small copper disk inset on the right sight with the word "proved" .The hilt is steel with an eagle surmounting a U.S. over a hunting horn. The handle looks like wired wrapped shark skin.

I'm pretty good identifying weapons and artillery, but swords are new to me. I would appreciate any/all information you can provide. I am attaching four pictures, but I am afraid they may not be as good as I would like.

Many thanks.

Due to the fact that officers had to buy their own weapons many US retailer imported swords from Germany. Walscheim made several versions of this sword and the one with the horn is the higher end harder to find sword. The grip is indeed sharkskin. Nice piece.
