I have spent a lot of time in cemeteries, battlefields, ancient castles and even spent a night or two in a casket (long story, part of the Old Guard initiation rights.) Still waiting for my first paranormal encounter, did not even see one at Ft McNair or any of the usual haunts in Charleston SC.

Dave, that is very interesting. There are many people who think that somebody has to be "in tune" with that kind of stuff (whatever that means). I have had some encounters, but I don't buy into that theory. I think that it is just one of those right place right time kind of things.

To be fair, though,I will add this.Last December, while I was in Virginia for the 150th Fredericksburg,I stayed with my niece and nephew in Dalgren, which is close to both Washington and Lees' birthplaces. My nephew took me to both.Didnt see any spookies, but I still vividly remember the creepiest reaction I felt at Stratford Hall.Keep in mind,it was early December, not really the height of tourist season, and we were literally the only two people there.
I still find it difficult to describe the feelings I was having. The lonliness, the winter geese honking, gave me the most melancholy feelings I can recall ever having. It was like I was somehow in the saddest place on Earth.I have been to absolutely tons of Civil War sites, but Stratford Hall just made the hair stand up,the skin crawl, and left me,still now, when i think about,a sense of deep foreboding.
Its quite possible that this forum could liven up a bit,if people could relate such emotional experiences,as mine, and not strictly paranormal misty forms and red eyes glowing in the dark.
Last September on the way up to the 150th Chickamauga,we took a side trip to Andersonville, and I can tell you, that i was not prepared for the feelings and emotions of that site AT ALL! I can honestly say that of all the CW sites i have visited,Andersonville is one I truly, truly, would not like to be in at night!

Andersonville NHS is VERY strange... during the day as well as at night...Ive been going there for years for part of the Living History program, nd there have been some very strange feelings, the occasional sighting by folks, and stuff that just cant be explained. What's really interesting, is that you can see, in the moonlight where the depressions in the ground where the shebangs were.... that gives a whole new level of creepy. Cant wait for March to get here!!!

Hey guys! I have been racking my brain lately about how to make this forum more active! I have tried to post new topics and such but to no avail. Should we just accept that there are very few on here interested in the paranormal? What are some suggestions to get this forum going?
Thanks,
Matt

I understand they have a branch of the sociology department at Gettysburg College that studies the paranormal. There was a professor their who had done cross cultural study in China-comparing reports of paranormal activity, near death experiences and such with that of western stories. He published a book about it, which I read several years ago. He chose china as his case study because it was accessible enough to get it, but yet there was still limited contact/cultural barriers at that time to make objective comparisons. The authors first name was Charles-"professor Charlie" I cannot remember his last name-if I did I could find his work on the internet. It was an interesting book. I belief his wife was a medium who spent some time at Lilydale, if you are familiar with that place. Does anyone know if he is still publishing? He was also on one of those discovery channel documentaries. I think it was "Ghosts of Gettysburg."

My paranormal experience was a bit different. We were visiting my maternal grandparents. As we were leaving, my grandfather was sitting in his chair in the den. I bent over behind the chair to kiss him on the top of his head. The very second I did that, all sight and sound stopped for a split second. I saw before me a t.v. screen with a snowy image. Then I heard or rather felt a voice say that he would be gone after 3 more visits with him. Sure enough, it happened after visiting them 3 more times. To this day I don't dare kiss anyone on top of the head.

The other "paranormal" experience I had was the day after Glorybound passed away. I was sitting at my computer, still in a state of shock, crying. Out of the corner of my eye, I swear I saw Lee come walking quickly into my room. I fully expected to feel his hand on my shoulder. It was at that moment that I was hit by the deepest sense of loss I have ever felt. I cried so hard, from the bottom of my soul. Much like the scene from the Robin Williams movie about him being a ghost and coming to his own grave to comfort his wife who was there. The moment he reached out and touched her, she broke down completely.

you probably did see him BBF I feel there always there when you need them, when my dad passes my aunt flew in, this is a women who never drank, smoked, swore and never took medicines. she always talked in a soft monotone voice, she stand out in the travel trailer while she was here.. she came in and said she talk to my dad, he came in and sat at the table and they talked. and she would have been the last person on earth to say something like that, which made it all the believable.
I just told my friend this one the other day.. 2 weeks after my dad passed I went to a shoeing competition, he was suppose to go with me, i got to a point I couldnt even breath I was so bummed out,I just wanted to quit, I heard my dad say.... If your not going to do it right,Dont do it at all! I said dad I cant do this!!! he said .. yes you can I will help you. I swear it wasnt my hand swinging that hammer, my dad had huge hands and I could feel it wrapped behind mine. I won that contest.
I always know when my dad is around even 23 years later I smell his after shave.

CL, I was turning 18 the next week when I had the experience with my grandfather. The "voice" was more like "hearing' someone else's thoughts. I did not recognize it as coming from anyone I knew.

Same here. And I sometimes "hear" him say "Good job" or "That's my girl" (in German of course).
This morning I had a strange little experience, not spooky at all, but strange. Last night I forgot to set my alarm clock. So this morning I slept over my usual time and when I just turned round and nestled again in my blanket I heard someone behind me say "beep". I turned round, of course there was nobody but I saw my alarm clock showing 6 am (I have to get up at 5.30 normally). So if my "guardian angel" hadn't warned me, I had been late to work. No big thing, but I still think about what or who it was who wakened me ...

Andersonville is quite small, and you can see the entire stockade site from the Visitor center, and easily walk its perimiter in an hour or so.Being a NPS park,night-time visiting,I would imagine,is quite strict and limited.I didnt see anything strange or paranormal there, but knowing what happened there and my first glimpse just gave me some really powerful feelings.

I would also like to thank all of you for the great stories you have posted over the last few days! They have been very interesting to read.

I have heard that Andersonville is the saddest place you will ever visit.
In regards to the Civil War,I think that that is a fair statement.Coupled with the far and away location it is quite a sad place. It really is like a journy back in time once you leave I-75(like I did at Cordele,ga.)An afternoon side-trip I am grateful I made, and wont ever forget. This is a peek into the stockade from the main entrance reconstruction
