Mary was hung by the neck until dead on account of conviction by a military tribunal convened to try the "conspirators" in Lincoln's assassination. She was held at the Old Capitol Prison, site of today's Supreme Court Building and at the Old Arsenal Prison, site of today's Ft. Leslie McNair, in SW Washington, DC. Her ghost is said to haunt the latter site - Christopher Coleman's Ghosts and Haunts of the Civil War: Authentic Accounts of the Strange and Unexplained is a good source - his story of Mary is here.

This is the "Hauntings" Forum and we should wait until Halloween to discuss this at length. I'll need time to bone up on Mary's execution to beat back the "truth squad" that will undoubtedly show up and try to tell everyone she deserved what she got. She did not, and young army officers stationed today at Ft. McNair will agree. Booohhh.... :bat:

OK. heres something for ya,,,,I kept running into this women at a store,, and its one of those people that you feel like you know them or should or something.... well she came up to me and asked me..... do you believe in spirits? I said yes! she apologized for the the question but explained she is Indian and she is ( I forget the word,) but she sees spirits...and in her tribe she is from, she comes from a long line of (what ever you call it) and said I have 4 spirits with me every time she sees me, so I asked if she could tell me about them.....one man who is very big who is showing her a motorcycle helmet this women said I think he was a cop, and hes showing me the color blue.......OK she got my attention.... My dad was a cop and my nieces name is blue
2.. a man who is very well dressed from the 1800s, handle bar mustache pocket watch with chain, but he is showing her a gangsters car and SHE didnt understand that because of the time difference, but said he really likes you! OK she has my attention again, I dont know who this man is YET but I own a 31 Chevy sedan special.
3. Is a Indian women but is dressed as a warrior and she was very protected of me.
4. some one I lost 40 years ago.....she not only described this person to a tee, she told me what this person had to say and used the exact words this person used.
I never meet her before or know of any one that I know. that knows her.. SO this was a year ago and to say the least we are friends. And shes really interesting.

Start by a naming the ghost contest. It works like this, find a possible haunting and get people to try to come up with a name for the ghost. Not the real name of the person who became the ghost, but something creative. For example a ghost who hangs out in a woods is " Woody or Woodrow" OK, sorry it was just a thought.

Drew I know who she is and why she was hung, but I didnt know she was haunting I wanted to know what she was doing, DREW you want me to wait a year!!!!! I dont think they should have hung her either, I dont think you have to be worried about the nay sayers, we are not here to debate if she should have been hung or not. just tell them .....They can put their two cents in, But their not getting any change back!!!!!!

Not a year but ten months...let me work on it...'tis the young officers' testimony that is most convincing...booohh...:bat:

I remember hearing or reading one time that Washington's ghost was seen on LRT while Chamberlain and the 20th Maine was holding the end of the line on July 2, but I can't recall anything specific about it. Has anyone else heard of this?

Hi Matt, I am new to this forum. I recently entered some of my photos in the photography contest. I saw this category and wanted to respond. I often times receive paranormal, I prefer "spiritual", images in my photographs. Because of this, I was so excited to see what I might capture when my husband and I visited Gettysburg but I have to say, I didn't receive anything outstanding. The same holds true of my trip to Ground Zero. Someone mentioned in one of the above posts that often times a spiritual or paranormal experience may involve strong emotion or a knowing of sorts. I totally agree with that! I have been to Gettysburg twice in my life and for me, I get a feeling or a sense that this Hallowed Ground serves as a marker for humanity, one composed of the psychic remnants of human sacrifice for the sake of true freedom and expression. I think these Grounds also beg us to search our hearts for other means of achieving that same goal without the need for heartache and blood shed!
That being said, I do have many awesome photographs and if you would like, I can post a few on this site but they were not taken at battlefields or pertain to the civil war in any respect. They will however, give your thread something to talk about
Thanks Matt, Connie

Never heard that but have heard of Barksdale's dog. Seems when the general's family came to move his body back to Mississippi, they brought his hunting dog. Once the dog sensed its master's grave, it set to howling and refused to leave the site even though the general had been dug up for transportation back home. It had to be left and refused food or water, presently dying on Barksdale's former grave. Seems the pooch is still there!
