Hi to all:
I acquired this musket (carbine? Can't see rifling due to rust) and am looking to get some idea of the brand.
I took it apart and noticed some # & lettering on the underside of the barrel. There is a #1, C, E & some type of insignia. Also down further is an S and a 5 and another 5.
There is also a # 28 on the underside of the trigger plate and on the counter plate.

At first I thought it might be a Palmetto since I saw a photo of one and mine looked almost identical but these marking on the underside of the barrel have me thinking it it something else.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Sorry can't help, but wait a little while and someone will be along to help you.

Welcome to CWT from the Smoky Mountain side of North Carolina.

Well, it looks like a Springfield to me but with no writing visible on the lock and most of the stock cut off and cut back it's hard to tell. Also with no rifling tangible in the barrel, or signs of a rear sight, I think you may have the remnants of an 1842 Springfield, once used in the Civil war but modified for civilian use, hunting, after the war. Do you know what the diameter of the bore is, closer to .69, or smaller? If smaller, say.60 or so, it might be a rifled 1861 Springfield that had the rifling ground down to make a smoothbore, better for shooting a load of buck or bird shot.

At first blush looks like a "sporterized" aka cut down Austrian Lorenz.

Thanks for the ID. As I look more at the Lorenz, I can see the similarities; especially on the lock-plate. Also found out that the insignia I was referring to is the Australian Style eagle Stamp that would also be behind the hammer.
Would you have any idea what the 28 stands for?

All Lorenzes were hand made at the time; you will often see Lorenzes where every part is numbered w/ the same # so the parts were kept together with the correct arm. Ie there are Lorenzes out there w/ all the parts labeled 1, others 24, 25 etc.
