Federal army wagons and railroad depot Barnard.

Today, the street level is a good 20' higher than it was then.

The old railroad gulch was bridged at several places after the war. Eventually plazas were built connecting the bridges which basically created a new level of the town and the ground where the track is became "Underground Atlanta".

Atlanta House, 1864

"This unidentified house is simply noted by George N. Barnard as Atlanta. There are two scenes of the residence; this is the closer view. In addition to the war's impact on the residents, houses, and transportation and other facilities of Atlanta, the environmental impact was heavy. Thousands of trees were leveled as the surrounding woods became a clear cut. As the land was denuded, the lumber from the trees was used to construct a ring of defensive fortifications encircling the city, as well as simply opening up the land to have a clear view of the approaching Union Army. Colonel Lemuel P. Grant was the engineer who designed and constructed Atlanta's defense works. A witness wrote of the landscape surrounding Atlanta: "Many trees had fallen by the army-woodsman's ax, and those left standing were but the shattered remnants of their former selves. The woods and fields were strewn with the bodies of dead and decaying animals."

This is in LoC just as ' Atlanta Street', I am more than sure members here know exactly which church this would have been?

Battlefield, Atlanta- only posting this in contrast to the amazing old buildings, how stark.

I was handed down the copy of my grgrgraunt's guide book for the Atlanta Cotton Exposition not a huge amount of years post-war. She was one of the representatives from New York. It's a great book- goes into the before/after on the war pretty intensely. You can't believe this city was once damaged at all much less economically challenged. The governor, mayor and various bigwigs give speeches which are recorded- gosh, you can see how proud they are of what Atlanta had become.
