He'll be comin' to Atlanta...

Sherman's Headquarters, Atlanta

The building next to the church was Sherman's Headquarters.

JPK, this is the same photo as in your stereotype.

Intersection of Washington and Mitchell Streets. Churches are Second Baptist and Central Presbyterian.

From the Atlanta Preservation Center, about the house which served as Sherman's HQ "Looking north on Washington Street, the home of Georgia State Supreme Court Judge Richard F. Lyon stands at the corner of Mitchell Street opposite Atlanta's city hall [current site of the Georgia State Capital]. Some of the city's finest residences were reserved for personal use by Sherman's staff and officers while many lesser, abandoned homes where dismantled and the lumber used to build cabins for Union troops. Built in 1859 by John Neal, the Lyon residence served as Sherman's own headquarters. Following the war, Lyon was forced to sell the house at auction when it was reacquired by John Neal. Never used as a residence again, it later served at various times as Oglethorpe College, Boys' High School, and Girls' High School. The building was demolished in 1928 to make way for the current city hall." http://www.atlantapreservationcenter.com/Preserved_on_Glass

Atlanta, Ga. Chevaux-de-frise on Marietta Street; photographic wagons and darkroom beyond, Barnard, 1864. LOC flickr.

An explanation of the chevaux-de-frise from the Atlanta Preservation Center:

"Fort Hood as seen from outside the fortification is protected by slanted rows of embedded stakes called fraises. Behind these are portable spiked logs called chevaux-de-frise and at left, a white picket fence used for the same purpose. Through all of this, one Union soldier observed, "a very meager man or a small boy might crawl, but not one of our well-fed soldiers with a musket in his hand." http://www.atlantapreservationcenter.com/Preserved_on_Glass

This is a great thread! My only complaint is that I am now singing "He'll be coming to Atlanta, when he comes, when he comes." Followed by " Hell be burning all the buildings" and " he'll be tying up the rails when he comes"...... ear worm for the day. Thanks!:cautious::roflmao:
