Gregory Newson is an artist, sculptor, y'know what, I'm just going to let Clyde Wilson introduce him:

African American Gregory Newson, a talented artist, was raised in New York but now lives and does his work in South Carolina. He has made contributions, both in art and writing, to Confederate history that deserve to be better recognised.

In 2016 he published Get Forrest, a beautifully illustrated biography. One could not ask for a more fair and interesting treatment of a controversial subject, a good gift for younger people or for anyone. Mr. Newson has courageously contradicted the prevailing ideological assumptions and given portraits of and written about real people— which is what historians should do. He has produced a number of works as well as the Forrest and provided illustrations for Shotwell's children's book on Lee written by Anne Smith Wilson.

He has appeared widely at reenactments and other public events and given interviews as a black Confederate, recently speaking at an Abbeville Institute summer school. He has always stressed the salience of blacks in the Confederate army.

Mr. Newson's latest work, Heroes by Force (Newson Publishing, 2022), is an exhaustively researched compilation of African Americans who helped sustain the outnumbered Confederate armies. (The title's use of "Force" is a little misleading.)

There are several good books about black Confederates, but Mr. Newson has published an exhaustive documentary record that cannot be easily dismissed.

Thank you Clyde Wilson for the summary. Newson's main work is his paintings, but it seems he's made a couple of children's books as well. (He did the forward for Lochlainn Seabrook's book "Everything You Were Taught About African-Americans".)

Newson's painting collection is very extensive, each painting selling for $150 on his website. Here are some of the worst best:

Yes, he seriously is trying to sell this stuff for $150.
Also I wanted to say that this guy was originally found by @TallTallMan , I'm just posting this on behalf of him.

Wow. You can go into the baboon enclosure at your local zoo, give one a brush, a canvas, and a few pots of paint, and get better quality material to frame for your house.

I like the maritime picture. Not $150 worth of like, but I could see it as an attractive cover for a science fiction/fantasy novel. It would make me pick up the book and at least take a peek inside.

Many authors and artists struggled in their own time and only gained popularity post-mortem or near the end of their time.

Some like fruit loops, some sugar pops, many rice crispies, cheerios or triscuits and trix. I don't like any cereals myself, with or without white milk. Normally we are our own worst critics once we are grown. I prefer to keep a bit of the child inside myself. I didn't have money to spend back then, and I sure don't now! Flavored oatmeal packets and poptarts for me please.
Lubliner.

I am honored that a thread about Gregory Newson was written in my honor.

I've sent this to a couple of users in PM but my favorite product is his coffee.

I'm a personal fan of his "Monument Themal Containers".

A lot to unpack here. Let's start with "My heavenly father has condescended to me ..." That's certainly a different tone than one gets from the accepted version of the New Testament. There's more - a lot more, such as why a character from The Walking Dead is being carried by Stonewall ....
It looks like that JC had the "discriminating" coffee.

I just now noticed he said "olive skinned". Oh boy.

"It's OK when we do it."

This is the Amazon * review of the Lee children's book humped by Wilson:

"Acid Trip Illustrations
Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2022

R.E. Lee is my favorite American hero, so I was really excited to find a children's book to share with my nieces and nephews. However, when I got the book and started flipping through the pages, I had to return it. The illustrations are seriously weird. Not just bad, but they look like the illustrator was tripping when he did them. They're absolutely bizarre! I'll keep looking for a good children's book about Lee because this is definitely not it. "

Anybody know if Clyde had some 'shrooms handy when he wrote his tribute to Newson?
