I used to work for the Texas Prison System. So that's where the Goree unit gets it's name.

When Goree and Longstreet met on the boat they were both travelling to Virginia to offer their services to the confeceracy.

Interestingly, Goree signed his last pay receipt with the rank of 1st Lt! I've never been able to find a promotion to CPT or MAJ...

His grandson, John W. Thomason wrote a biography on Stuart and at the beginning mentions all the old veterans would come to his grandfather's house to talk about the war and gush over Stuart. Thomason was a Marine officer and noted artist.
