Most sources have him taking part in the battle of Olustee but the Official Records don't list him as a participant. After the battle of Olustee in 1864 he was placed in charge of all prison camps east of the Mississippi except the ones in Alabama and Georgia.

Gardner had been on sick leave prior to the battle but returned to the field about a week after the Battle of Olustee. He assumed command of the pursuit from BG Joseph Finnegan who had commanded during the battle.

Assorted references to Gen W. M. Gardner:

He is shown in the 10/27/64 list of commands as BG commanding the post of Richmond as part of the overall command of MG Kemper's command of Richmond Forces.
His command consisted mainly of Lt Col Pemberton's artillery defenses

From my notes, this is the only reference I find to him in this regard.

My notes also refer to him as follows:
9/19/63 by Sec of War- S O #223
XXVI. Brig Gen W. M. Gardner is assigned to the Ga Bgde commanded by Brig-Gen Barton, Stevenson's Div. Gen Barton, on being relieved, will report to Maj-Gen Pickett for assignment to a Bgde in his Div.

5/17/64 Jones to P Anderson-If Gen Gardner's health will permit it, assign him to command of the Fla Bgde vice Finegan. Use your discretion about it.

2/7/65 Ft Johnson, SC, Hqs Bonaud's Bn S Arty [S for siege]-Maj Bonaud cdg Bn to Gen Cooper- Co F of 28th Ga Bn-This Co is attached to the 11th Fla in Va & its status is unknown-Forwarding roster of officers of my Bn-It is the 3rd one sent by me.
My Bn is composed of 10 Co's & entitled to be organized as a Regt.
Application for this has been made several times, but without any result. The first was made by Gen Gardner, then cdg the Sub Dist of Fla, & the last was by Gen Jones, then cdg this Dept, in Sept. All the muster rolls & the report of the inspection of my Bn were then forwarded by him.
