I was doing some work on the uniforms worn by the Colorado Territory troops and ran across some information on their arms. They were partly armed with Garibaldi rifles. Can I assume these were not 'first class" arms? Based on the use of the Colorado regiments it would seem that they might not need the very best weapons.

I take it the reference of Garibaldi rifles refer to Austrian Fruwirth rifles. I do believe some Austrian Fruwirth Jeager rifles were used in the Civil War, but these were not the same weapon were they?

The 1st Colorado Cavalry ("Governor Gilpin's Pet Lambs"); the 3rd Colorado Cavalry ("The Bloodless Third"); and the
1st Colorado Mounted Militia (Provisional) ("Tyler's Rangers"); were all partially armed with Muster 1849 and 1844 Kammerbüchsen ("Garibaldi" rifles) during their service, including the participation of the 1st and 3rd Cavalry in the Sand Creek Massacre. Although Kammerbüchse were used to arm the first two ranks in Austro-Hungarian Army Jäger battalions, they were not "Jäger" rifles per se, in that they were also used to arm the third rank men in Grenz (Border Infantry) regiments, sharpshooters in line infantry units, and specialist troops such as engineers, pioneers, and naval infantry

I've got to say that you guys dig up some things that are so obscure to me as to be minutia to me, and there is ALWAYS someone who can come back and speak with a certain degree of authority about any minutia! That's what keeps me clicking in to many, many threads here. Thanks, Guys!
