Hi all this is my first post. I signed up to see if it's possible to find out who my rifle was issued to or at least the regiment. I have a Smiths Patent carbine that has been in my family since my grandfather picked it up somewhere. It's got a serial number of 3324 and has two inspectors stamps in the wood stock: LFR and JH. It's got a JH on the left side of the barrel as well. It's got a 33 and a 24 above and below the 3324 on the hinge. It has the bar and ring for when the cavalry would ride and need to secure it down. It's in great shape and is only missing the spring for the hammer. Is there a way using the serial number I could trace it back to who it was issued to? My great x3 grandfather fought for the union in the 19th Kentucky Infantry but i seriously doubt they used this weapon. Still, I'm curious as to who may have owned it. If I need to post pics I will follow up with some once I upload them. Thanks, Brian

Welcome, If you could post some photo to include the markers marks and the serial # we can take a look and see what we can find on your Smith. Looking forward to seeing it.

Great News! On Feb 16, 62 your Smith #3324 was listed on the rolls of the 1st Mass Vol Cav. This information is in the Springfield Research Records. As UCV Relics posts someone will confirm the serial number and let you know who the inspector marks belong to after you post some photos.

Welcome, enjoy. LFR was Lafayette F. Rodgers, JH was most likely Joseph Hannis. The Smith was a very popular carbine. Even though Infantry would normally have rifles not to say some carbines were not used. Suggest you use the Search Feature at top right and enter Smith Carbine, you will find a lot of info on them
