Civil War Career:
1861 – 1862: Captain of Company A, 5th Virginia Infantry Regiment
1862: In April, Elected Lt. Colonel of 5th Virginia Infantry Regiment
1862 – 1864: After Col. Baylor was killed leading the brigade at Second Manassas, Funk became Colonel of 5th Virginia Infantry Regiment
1863: Temporarily commanded his brigade as the senior Colonel during the Battle of Chancellorsville after Brigadier General Paxton was killed.
1863: In command of the 5th Virginia Infantry Regiment at Culps Hill at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
1863: On October 26th, Funk and the regiment were involved in a skirmish with federal cavalry, where 5 bullets cut through his clothes without wounding him
1864: Mortally wounded during the Battle of Winchester, Virginia on the 19th of September.
