John C. Cobb, 96th USCT

Greetings,

I am looking for sources on Col. John C. Cobb, 96th USCT. Any sources related to the summer of 1864.

Thanks in advance!

Here's some information from "Colonels in Blue."

A more complete bio from 1882...

Re Col. John C. Cobb (1837-1910).

On Aug. 17, '62 Cobb transferred to, and became Colonel of, the 2nd Regiment Engineers Corps d'Afrique, which was later organized (re-designated) as the 96th Regiment USCT on Apr. 4, '64. (See https://www.nps.gov/civilwar/search-battle-units-detail.htm?battleUnitCode=UUS0096RI00C ). There is a little information on Cobb found at, https://emergingcivilwar.com/2025/1...-engineers-corps-dafrique-in-civil-war-texas/ .

In Mar.'64, Col. Cobb commanded construction work undertaken by combined engineering units at Fort Esperanza and at Bayou McHenry. Col. Cobb's detailed official report, dated Mar. 23, '64, on this construction work is found at 'OR': Vol. 34, Part 2, @ pp. 702-04.
