In book, "Civil War Recipes Receipts from the Pages of Godey's Lady's Book, there is Godey's version on Hot Slaw. This recipe is called Dressing for Cabbage from 1864.

"Cut your cabbage fine in a dish (soak in cold water for one hour) and sprinkle salt and pepper over it, take one egg, a teaspoonful of sugar, one half spoonful of flour, one-half teacup of sweet cream, the same of vinegar, a very small piece of butter. Beat all together and let it boil; then pour over the cabbage while hot."

From: "Civil War Recipes Receipts from the Pages of Godey's Lady's Book", editors Lily May Spaulding and John Spaulding. page 102.

Nope, some how I've never ended up trying it. I've been encouraged to try it, but never gave it chance. I realized that I've had hot cabbage in the from of a Chinese egg roll, that I like, but who doesn't like greasy deep fried food?
Since you live in the big Apple go into a Jewish deli and have stuffed cabbage.they make the sweet style which is real good.

A recipe of Hot Slaw from the 1930s.

"Place 4 cups shredded cabbage in flat bottomed saucepan, add 1 teaspoon salt, 1/8 teaspoon pepper, 1 cup light cream and 2 tablespoons vinegar, and heat until cream boils, stirring lightly with fork. Serve immediately. Makes 6 servings."

From: "America's Cook Book" complied by The Home Institute of the New York Herald Tribune, 1937.
