Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm betting pretty much everyone who is eating turkey will have a bread based dish with it. Do you call that stuffing? Or do you call it dressing? And where did you grow up?

In my experience dressing is a southern term and stuffing a Northern. But I could be wrong.

As for me - we have dressing, made with cornbread. I grew up in New York but my parents are both from the South.

I call it stuffing 'cause that's what's on the box. 🫤

Having lived in the South for most of my life, I find that in my family we have used the terms dressing and stuffing interchangeably. In fact, my wife and I did this between us just today!

I was born, and grew up, in the south but lived one year in Ann Arbor, MI when I was in high school and moved way out west when I was 23. I really don't remember if we had a preference when I was a kid. I've heard both for all of my life but have personally used stuffing as that seems more accurate for what it is.

I've never liked turkey much (especially the white meat) but do like the stuffing. I was always glad when there was also ham.

Neither turkey or ham for us today: beef tenderloin with garlic mashed potatoes and green beans followed by choice of a pumpkin or a berry pie. Oh, and some very good red wine. And a nice fire around dusk. It's just the two of us (and our dog) but it'll be nice and we'll count blessings and reasons to be thankful.

Stuffing for sure, for sure. What's dressing? The same thing?

Dressing is what you put on a salad. ;)

I suppose the technical difference is how you cook it. Traditionally, stuff was literally stuffed inside the turkey carcass for cooking. Dressing was, I presume, cooked alongside the turkey instead of inside. The introduction of "stove top stuffing" muddies the situation.

We had dressing with giblet gravy. Stuffing is actually stuffed inside the turkey or chicken. (Unless it's stovetop) Dressing never goes into the bird. It's made from cornbread, biscuits chicken or turkey broth, celery onions, eggs, and sage ( not too much) among other ingredients.

We also had a pan of oyster dressing. It was the same recipe with oysters added. Most people would stay away from the oyster dressing but Grandaddy always wanted it and after he passed, we always made a pan and ate it just to remember him ..

You are 100% correct.

Do you call that stuffing? Or do you call it dressing?
Down here in Mississippi, these two dishes are not the same thing.
We always have cornbread dressing...which is a very long & labor intensive project when " done right".
But the end result is well worth the effort
