His nomination as brigadier of volunteers was made by Lincoln on April 5, 1865 but was not submitted to the Senate before Lincoln's death.Dent was renominated and resubmitted by President Johnson on January 13, 1866 and confirmed by the Senate on Febuary 23, 1866.
