Earlier in the war his service to the Confederacy included staff positions. Davidson's staffs included John Floyd, Albert S. Johnston, Simon Buckner, and William Wackall.He later became a Cavalry commander.

Davidson took command of John Pegram's Cavalry Brigade on September 18th 1863, just as the unit went into combat near Jay's Mill. However, Dave Powell in his first book of the Chickamauga Trilogy noted how it seemed his prescence did not seemed to be felt by the brigade.

Davidson was captured at Island #10. After being exchanged on August 27, 1862 Davidson was promoted to colonel and commanded the military post of Stauton,Virginia until August of 1863. He was promoted to brigadier on August 18, 1863 and was transferred to cavalry units. His first was a brigade in Pegram's Division of Forrest's Cavalry Corps.
