I don't know if it has been posted before, but the University of Vermont's Landscape Change Program has online an extensive and useful resource for "Dating Historic Images." Explained examples from the 1840s to the 1950s are given in a wide range of categories, including clothing, hair, buildings, carriages, bridges, and many others. Check it out.

Agree with John Winn, that is quite a comprehensive site. Interesting find.
