As a boy, my mom would take me to Chock full of Nuts coffee shops during our trips to Manhattan. They were famous for their delicious date nut bread and cream cheese sandwiches. I rejoiced when one opened near me in Westbury. It closed several years ago and woe is me.

If you enjoy dates, you should try this date salad. It is from May/June edition of "The Kentucky Explorer Magazine. These are old recipes readers contribute.

Date Salad

One package of dates, one pound of green grapes, threes medium sized apples, one cup of walnuts. Cut the grapes into halves and remove stones, quarter dates and cut apples into small pieces. Add the nuts and mix with the following dressing: one egg, one teaspoon of mustard, one fourth cup of sugar, one fourth teaspoon of salt, one teaspoon of butter. Beat the egg and add other ingredients. Then add one fourth cup of vinegar and one half cup of milk. Cook until thick, then arrange salad on lettuce leaves.

A truly different but tasty salad.
