From my notes, a portion of a time line referencing Daniel in 1862:

5/1/62 Daniel has been in command of a Bgde from N C in Gen Holmes' division since the first of May

5/6 camp near Goldsboro to Gen Cooper, Richmond from Junius Daniel Col 45th NCT cdg 2nd Bgde Dept of NC-asks that J N Edmundston be apptd a Major & QM & ordered to report to me for duty with the 2nd Bgde Dept of NC.

I would respectfully state that this Bgde is composed of four new Regts of NCT & that there is no Regimental QM in it-who can perform the duties of a Bgde QM

6/18 Holmes S O #133- [Col Daniel] Move to Petersburg
while a Col he commanded a Bgde of the 43rd, 45th, 50th NC Regts Infy & Burroughs Bn Cav [aka 3rd NC Bgde]

53rd NC added 6/21 or within a few days [by 6/28]

8/18/62
The 2nd NC Bn was exchanged, & ordered to rendezvous at Drewry's Bluff-Whilst in camp there attached to Col (later Gen) Daniel's Bgde

8/29 Daniel's Brigade had spent the summer working on the fortifications at Drewry's Bluff, was ordered to Richmond on 8/29

9/25 By this date, Daniel's Bgde consisted of the 32nd, 43rd, 45th, 50th, & 53rd NC units & the 2nd NC Bn. During the next several months, the Bgde was "thoroughly drilled & attained as high a state of efficiency & discipline as any Bgde in the CS army." Daniel was described as "a good organizer & a strict disciplinarian, but always looked after the wants & comfort of his men."

9/30/62 Daniel received promotion to Brig Gen with a date of rank of 9/1

Reading up on Robert Rodes, it seems that Daniel may have been Rodes' favorite brigadier. I've found multiple cases where Daniel was singled out for promotion to Major General. One wonders if he hadn't been mortally wounded at the Mule Shoe May 12th; would he have gotten Early's Division instead of Ramseur? Wonder how he'd perform compared to the hot headed Ramseur at Bethesda Church and Rutherford's Farm.
