That was also my first thought.

I'm assuming the square-cornered raft or floating battery vessel to the right is the CSS Tennessee and to the immediate right of the Tennessee is the CSS Virginia ?

Within the next row, is the brown vessel (second to left ) the CSS Arkansas ?

Did soldiers during the war carve boats out of wood and sail them in a creek or on a lake when they were't marching or shooting at each other?

I think there is a story about how a small sailboat (s?) were used to sail contraband across a river (Rappahannock, I think). The pickets on both sides did alot of trading of certain items like coffee for tobacco and such among each other.

That sounds familiar to me too. Leave it to a soldier to take something fun and use it for something practical... to come up with something even more fun.

I use 1/4" popular for the hulls. Basswood, pine, and balsawood for structural parts. Various square and round dowels. Stick pins, and small finishing nails. Scrollsaw, hobbysaw, and exacto knife. Hand sanding, acrylic paints and a whole lot of research and patience. I enjoy building the ships.

I wonder if a set of chocolates molded to scale in the shapes of Confederate and Union ironclads with appropriate descriptions and artwork would sell at gift shops. What about plastic floating ones you could play with in the tub? Instead of kids avoiding the bath they might need extra time to capture New Orleans or run past Vicksburg.
