This was not the son of John Crittenden but a nephew and he was also a cousin to the other general Crittendens. He had been commander of the garrison at Murfreesboro for only one day when he was surprised and captured on July 13, 1862. For this He was severely criticised for his lack of preparations. He was exchanged the following October and briefly held command of a brigade under Rosecrans before resigning.

5 days after the Fort Sumter bombardment Crittenden was made captain in the 6th Indiana. He became it's colonel in a little over a week following that.
