When He joined Early in the Valley he not only saw action at Cedar Creek but 3rd Winchester and Fisher's Hill as well this was, before his moving into the trenches at Petersburg.
 
He did take over brigade command from George Doles in 1864 but earlier at Antietam he took over command of the 4th Georgia when Doles took over for the wounded General R.S. Ripley.
