I have a 2nd model Colt Dragoon revolver, serial number 8840 (so quite early) and I have read that 1st models and some 2nd models had a V mainspring and later ones had a flat mainspring. I can't find any photos of the springs and would like to ask members if I have a V spring from the photos that I have attached? Can post more photos if required.

hold up your hand and extend your index and middle finger. You've made the World War II sign for "V for Victory"
Now fold one of those fingers so only one is extended.
As with fingers, so with springs!

Nice looking Colt.
We would all like to see more photos!

Thanks Jeff, nicely explained. As requested I have added a few more images. It has all matching numbers and there is even a bit of the cylinder scene visible. Bought it here in the UK a few months ago, very pleased but a bit poorer now.

The U.S. stamp under the patent date will increase its value also. Very nice piece.
It is amazing to me as how many ACW guns are showing up in the UK and Europe .

Many thanks for your comments. It is interesting how so many Civil War arms are here in the UK. I had a small collection many many years ago and most I bought from the US and had them shipped (bought from Dave Taylor and Will Gorges amongst others). It was no problem then but almost impossible now to get anything firearm related shipped across the pond. When working I used to visit the US fairly often and always tried to combine it with a civil war or gun show or visit a battlefield, great days. Brought my purchases home in my luggage with little problem, all changed now. I will keep you all posted on any future purchases here in the UK. Thanks again to all.

With regards to the US mark I did read somewhere that most of the 2nd models were purchased by the US government. I'm waiting with anticipation for Charles Pate's book on the Colt Dragoons, has anyone heard of a likely print date?
