Oh my goodness. Wilber, I don't know what to say. I'm actually teary-eyed. It's amazing. You can see a soul in this photo.

Truly sad that he died of sickness a few months after Gettysburg....

The officers of his staff published a resolution that set forth the esteem in which he was held by those in his command:

... we, the staff officers of the late Major General John Buford, fully appreciating his merits as a gentleman, soldier, commander, and patriot, conceive his death to be an irreparable loss to the cavalry arm of the service. That we have been deprived of a friend and leader whose sole ambition was our success, and whose chief pleasure was in administering to the welfare, safety and happiness of the officers and men of his command.... That to his unwearied exertions in the many responsible positions which he has occupied, the service at large is indebted for much of its efficiency, and in his death the cavalry has lost firm friend and most ardent advocate. That we are called to mourn the loss of one who was ever to us as the kindest and tenderest father, and that our fondest desire and wish will ever be to perpetuate his memory and emulate his greatness​

Oh my. I've sent some of my favorite Civil War photos to that Snapfish cite, ( although I think most of them do this ) where they make them into large, flat refridgerator magnets. Hee- my family has to look at let's see- Grant and Cincinatti, Chamberlain, Gettysburg Cemetary Gatehouse, my grgrgrandfather, when they pour milk on cereal in the morning. They make 2 sizes, one small, one large. Buford, guess which size he will be? I hope it's ok to swipe this. It's just wonderful- gosh, from everything I've read of the man, it does indeed seem to capture the scope of his personality, doesn't it? Plus, you know you're looking at Regular Army- this man was no politician dressed up, to be sure!

Thanks for the info Wilber...great colorization of Buford! Something about the colorization humanizes them for me, we've seen the pictures a million times, but you can't help but look at them differently now, you know what I mean?

For what it's worth- it's exactly how I got hooked on all this as a child- the personal stories, interesting historical figures, old photos, people who cared enough about it to make them come alive! Valuable, getting through to that kid's head. I'll bet when every child in that class is 50, they'll remember who the blind general was, notsomuch Snooki whoever that is, just in the headlines I saw a couple days ago.
