Breath taking Wilber! Bravo--I really liked this particular General who was Cavalry through and through and reputation of taking care of his horses and men, makes him an instant 'like' for me (being a horse buff).

Excellent work. I'm still catching my breath. Thank you sooooooooooooooo much for this effort to colorize these photographs.

Funny what you said on not being able to draw etc. I'm an artist, thought I'd also be able to do photography. Nope. Took 3 classes in school ( kept trying ) and still nope. Just do not have it, whatever the 'it' is with all this stuff. It's an inate eye and whatever the gift and talent is, love looking at it though!

Interesting photograph -- be interesting to see what they have in their hands. Looks like a sandwich in the far left red shirted fellow sitting on the log. But, I fear it is an 'intact' "Hardtack" --Being on a laptop, it limits the details until its blown up. It is a very nice 'break time' photograph.

It is some very large Hardtack, there was some discussion on the site i found it as to whether or not these were Johnnys or Yanks. There is a couple of types of canteens present and there weopons appear to be Enfields. Alot of neat things in this photo.

I ran across a photographer who worked with National Geographic once and he gave me advice that has served me well... He said examine photographs that I really enjoyed and could look at over and over again and that just grab my attention..Then take a step back and try to find what about those photos that really grabbed me, then after you discover what that is, try to make those things the center of the pictures I take...Then at least if no one else likes your pictures, you have some that you can really enjoy and take your breath away...

This may be a wild guess (after pondering Will's advice) - there are 4 stacked Enfield's - 4 of the men have kepi's - the 2 in the middle are surrounded by the kepi boys - 1 slouch hat (ala CSA) is on the muskets. Could the 2 in the middle (CSA) be prisoners of the 4 others (USA) ?

These pictures are outstanding! I always felt that being limited to viewing a picture only in black and white was like only being able to see a sunset without color.

Is it just me or do a couple of these guys seem extremely similar is features? I realize they're all wearing the requisite funereal expressions people of that era seemed to feel they needed to assume for photographers, so possibly it's just that. Still- at least 2 of these seem a lot alike.

One of the reasons I just love that photo of the 3 Confederate prisoners taken after Gettysburg is that they are NOT wearing this expression, and in fact seem a little punacious about the whole captivity thing.

Yes, I can see where a lot of expert guidance would be extremely helpful to a photographer. There still seems to be 'something' one has or doesn't, you know? My daughter-in-law is one, a professional. We can be at the same family event, take the sameeee shots, compare notes. Wow. It could be a day when she doesn't have her super-duper professional Nikon whatever it is, just a run of the mill digital with her, like mine. Or a darn cell phone. Her shots just have some intrigue about them you can't define, instead of documenting the event hers take you to it somehow. My PLAN is to talk her into coming to Gettysburg with me to 'visit' my daughter, see what her shots around the battlefield look like. What a sneaky mother- in- law she has, poor thing.

Hopefully, it can be blown up as to see what kind of details can be pulled.

What is interesting is how these young men wear their kepi/slouch hat. Men personalizing their head wear hasn't changed that much.

As long as their picture is here in this Earthly place, their presence remains to remind what was.

I hijacked it off of Pete Paolillo (Double P)'s Face Book page. he sells good authentic hardtack in bulk. He has a lot of period photos of hardtack and men with it. Under the commints on the picture he said he found it on an auction site and it was listed as Confederates but he and others had a short disscussion as to whether or not they might be Federals. He had some enlargements of it not sure if you can enlarge it from the one I posted or not, it would be cool if you can. The kid seated in the blue shirt looks to be bare footed.

So what is the concensus here in the forum, please? Is it that because of the kepis and Enfields, they would be Union, or isn't this necessarily so? I don't know much on identifying these- followed one of the threads where a photo was blown up with an awful lot of detail, things discussed. I think I'm trying to be a fly on the wall and hoping it happens again.
