That is a possibility, the guy seated on the left looks like he is holding up a drum style canteen which lends to Confederate issue but was also a prised war trophy by the Federals. Something else interesting about him is he appears to be wearing boots instead of brogans, while not unheard of by union soldiers it could be another Confederate indicator. I cant wait to see what other details Wilber can pull out.

Good points, Roy - if those 2 are prisoners - this would be a fairly rare photo - I've only seen a handful of CSA POW photos. Hmmmm.....

Center standing and center seated look too much like brothers for me to buy that the hatless men are prisoners. Photos of Confederates in camp are so rare that I have to believe this would be more known. The Washington Artillery may have been THE most photographed unit in the CSA, so maybe that's the place to start.

If this is a direct image, the letters on the cart box will be reversed. If a paper print image, they will be normal.

I removed the color so we can examine without artist interpetation...Have to tell you that to me these guys seem Union.. Can't quite place my finger on why yet...Hmmm the shirts seem federal issue...Just a quick question, are we sure these guys aren't reenactors?

Notice the bare feet on the one in the middle...And the one to the left wearing boots....Strange mix...

Obviously the stamped U.S. is reversed....by the process. So that would answer any other "reversal" questions.

Nice dirty bare feet, LOL. I would say not reenactors just because they're too.....thin.

Not so obvious, I have examined plenty of images where the US is not reversed like this guy.....

But, I have rarely seen an image of a shoeless soldier, and it looks like this guy has either very tanned or very dirty feet..

No, not the plate--the stamped U.S. on the leather flap. Sorry I didn't make myself clear.

I don't know but there is something just not right or odd with this picture...

I went back to Double P's page to see if there was any more info on it. According to the comments it was copied from the Old South Antiuques page. Im not sure when but it is not there now. It was listed as Confederates and sold for $14,000. Im thinking this is probably an early war photo. If they are Johnnys they are definatly sporting some Federal equipment. I would say they are Union most likely but part of me wants to believe they are Confederate. I dont think they are Reenactors though, just something about their overall look makes me believe they are the genuine article.

It looks like a pickup truck with a cap to me. License plate below cap's rear window which is to the left of the tree trunk.

I do not see it. Any way I started a new thread with this photo called Soldiers eating hardtack, and enlargements of it I was able to get a hold of. Im also putting the B&W version Wilber made over there so we can talk this one to death withought hi jacking Wilbers thread.
I for one would really like to see some more of Wilbers awsome colorization work. Having said that Wilber please also feel free to make some more enlargments of the soldiers with Hardtack

The second guy from the right, with the interesting hair cut and the knotted suspenders does have a 19th century look about him thats for sure, the others not so much lol I can't make out a car, but I think I see what your talking about, can someone mark it and repost...

That struck me also, usually you might have one or two with that "off in the distance look" but the whole group seem to be looking at everywhere but the camera....
