Civil War Idiot's Delight

This recipe was passed down by a lady who said her ancestors had used it during the hard times after the Civil War. She said it was very popular because it used only a few, inexpensive and easy to obtain ingredients. She also said, "Even an idiot can make it." That's my kind of cooking!

Ingredients:
1 c. brown sugar
1 c. raisins
1 tbsp. butter
1 tsp. vanilla
4 c. water
7 tbsp. butter
1/2 c. white sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 c. milk
1 c. flour

Directions:
Boil together the first 5 ingredients. Make a batter of the second 5 ingredients. Drop the batter in a greased pan by spoonfuls. Pour first mixture over it and bake in a moderate oven until golden brown.

This reminds me of someting very similar but for the life of me i can't think of its name.but idiots delight will do just fine.

Now, now - I've given poor Waterloo no end of grief over Spotted Dick and Boiled Baby! Sounds gruesome but it's actually pretty good.

Ellie. Thanks for posting this delicious looking cookie recipe which I never heard of before. Since the word "idiot" is referenced relative to the construction of this particular cookie a question comes to mind: Does a person have to be necessarily an idiot in order to eat them? If that is the case I can think of one particular person who this cookie would be prefect for. Just kidding of course. David.
