The surgeon told her that she did a really good job of screwing up her shoulder, but that he believes he made a good repair. She will be in an immobilizer for at least 8 weeks and perhaps 12; it's presently too soon to know. She's got a lot of pain today.

The problem is that it's her right--dominant--hand in the immobilizer.

Susan's sister is here to help until tomorrow--she is a surgical physician's assistant and needs to get back to work. Her other sister is flying in from California as I write this. She'll be here until the 18th. Then we'll be pretty much on our own. This is going to be a challenge.
Safe to say that everybody here is behind you and Susan as you weather this challenge.

I saw a great update in gofundme that @Eric Wittenberg got to ring the bell!
I did indeed--yesterday. It was one of the happiest moments of my life. Now comes the hip surgery, although I don't yet know when. Thanks for noticing, Jamie. I appreciate it.

Hey everyone if you have not looked at the go fund me tonight, Eric had a little down turn. Here it is from the go fund me

Update on Eric, 07/31/2024

It's been a mad couple of days. I wish the news I have on Eric was better than it is.

Eric had one small stroke on the left side of his brain that was caused by a clot, and one small occlusion on the right. The clot occurred in the speech center of his brain, causing aphasia where he was mixing up words and sounding confused. He knew where/when he was, and was fully cognizant of everything going on around him, but didn't realize that his speech was confused and mixed up. The occlusion happened on the right in the area that manages strength and muscle control in the lower body. The occlusion caused some weakness in his legs. They started him on anticoagulants and clot busting medications Monday night. When I left him last night, the aphasia was pretty bad. I talked to him this morning, and he sounds much better. He is already much clearer, and only mixed up a few words.

He will be in the hospital for at least another day or two. I have not spoken with a doctor yet today. They are going to run some tests and scans on his blood vessels to see if they can figure out where the clot came from.

I know we have asked a lot of our friends and adoptive family for healing thoughts, prayers, and help, and thank every one of you who has been so kind to keep us in your hearts. I will update everyone when we have more information to give. This is a setback, but Eric is determined to not let it interfere with his treatment plans. He wants to walk on his favorite Civil War Battlefields again, and plans to do this sooner than later. If I know Eric, he will succeed.

There is no such thing as too many prayers said!!! MrsMRB and I continue to pray for Eric and Susan and encourage each of you to do the same if you are not already doing so. And those who offer up prayers...please continue to do so. Eric and Susan are both "Friends of History" and present it with a passion to anyone who reads or listens. Thank you both for your dedication to our passion and God Bless you both.
We are anxious for Eric to answer the call of "Boots and Saddles" and ride again!!!!

Not sure if you're getting updates on Eric's condition, but the latest one said that he had suffered a stroke as a result of a blood clot. He is recovering but this is a physical and financial setback for someone who has contributed so much to our knowledge of the Civil War.

If you are able to help there is a GoFundMe for Eric's medical expenses.

Agree on the GoFundMe. It's raised a lot but there's a lot more needed. Eric is a colleague to all of us and a friend to many of us, and we've all benefited from his work and his insights here and elsewhere. Any amount helps.

Savas Beatie has just announced a renewed donation opportunity.

SAVE 10, DONATE 10. (Please read)
https://www.savasbeatie.com/
YOU save 10% on nearly every book in stock (excluding classic reprint sets), and WE will donate 10% of the price of the book to Eric for medical costs.
THESE ARE CHALLENGING TIMES for everyone, but if you need an excuse, here's one. As most of you know, our friend and Civil War author Eric J. Wittenberg was going through cancer treatment and trying to get surgery on his hip and then suffered a stroke. He spent some time in a facility to help regain his speech, with some success, but let's face it--he and his wife Susan have a long wrong ahead. And let's just say they are having a hard time making ends meet.

I wish this was going on when I ordered the Batchelder Papers last week. I guess that I'll have to put in another order. Dang.

And - to repeat - if you use the GoFundMe route, no amount is too small and you can donate anonymously.

I just bought Eric's books about Gettysburg's eastern and southern flank cavalry engagements with the promo, so double the benefit to him.

I wish this was going on when I ordered the Batchelder Papers last week.

I think that would be considered one of the "classic reprint sets" not eligible for the promo.

I missed that aspect of the promo. Again, I guess that I'll have to make another order.
