My latest book haul for the library.

If anyone has any of these volumes I am missing, or has a lead on where I might be able to locate them please let me know. I have the "completionist" form of O.C.D. and not filling these sets out is going to keep me up at night.

I'm just curious — what is the publication date for this set.
Over the years, I think I've owned books from 3(?) different publications. One was leather bound and in fair condition. Then I had the smaller profile publication with a mustard yellow jacket. I think I've gotten rid of all of them.

1) Unit
2) Brigade & leader(s)
3) Division & leader(s)
4) Battles
5) Campaigns

My most recent acquisition was some book by an officer of the famous 54th Massachusetts. Trouble with the book is he returned home on sick leave during the Siege of Battery Wagner --- the exact time in history that I was researching.

So if yes to any of those five, it might be worth a look. You should flip through the pages to see if anything is relevant to your interest. No one would buy a book about some unit in Arizona or New Mexico if they're studying Lee or the Army of the Potomac.

Todays additions, The Bull Run to Chancellorsville is signed by the author, The Soldier in our Civil War is both volumes and in good shape, and I am pretty excited about the History of the First NY Dragoons as it is also an original edition.

If a local library is doing extensive remodeling, you might be able to score some nice sturdy and matching bookcases for free or at a reasonable cost as long as you haul them away yourself. The library consortium my village library belongs to has a "For Sale/Free to a Good Home" page on their website that is accessible to the public. My former employer has sold smaller items (chairs, tables and file cabinets) with a notice on the library's website.

Company of Military Historians doesn't pay for articles. Neither does the UKCWRT, but they do publish Crossfire, which is both an online and physical magazine. If it's gun related, you can try either Muzzle Loader or Muzzle Blasts. I've had articles published in both. Good luck.

For old books I use those acid free storage box (keeps insects out) and archival tissue paper. Boxes are stored flat so there's no pulling by the weight of the paper against the cover. Old books need care (don't allow sunlight to fade the cover) and loving too.

That's a fine haul! I bought Vol I and II; first edition of Freeman's Lee's Lieutenants and vol 1 was autographed but Vol III was missing . I found Vol III online after extensive looking

Note the quality of the paper. Cotton-linen fibre that generally lasts a long time. I have "How George Peck Put Down the Rebellion" and it's a terrific read, but printed on wood pulp paper that is fragile thanks to the acid in the paper. Of late I've been replacing some paperback pocket books with hardcover which have superior paper.

Just a gentle reminder for anyone looking for the first edition of a book that was published in the US in the 1940s: From 1940 to 1949, war paper was used for books. The paper and the bindings were of inferior quality in order to conserve raw materials for the war effort. The paper looks tanned or badly yellowed. The books tend to be smaller with a smaller typeface and less white space. If your book went on to have multiple printings or editions that came out later and you don't care about it being a first edition, then you can upgrade, but if it is a more esoteric book (as some Civil War books are) that didn't get a later printing, then you may be stuck with what you have. Modern books may have a statement about meeting archival and museum quality standards for paper on the copyright page if long-term durability is a concern.

I totally get wanting to upgrade your favorite books. I finally have all of Jeff Shaara's books in hardbound. I'm currently considering what to do about my Sharpe's Rifles books which are mostly paperback and both trade and mass market in size. I'd love to have a set that matches, but that could get expensive and difficult for an older person whose death would land the books with one of several Friends of the Library groups, so perhaps not the best use of resources. I don't buy into new series anymore. That's what the library card is for.
